My brakes started to whistle the other day, and I'm getting more brake dust on my rims. Does this mean its time to change my brake pads? If so does this call for both front and back brakes? Thanks in advance for everones input!

In the Service Menu, you will find the number of usable miles left on your Front and Rear brakes.

Based on memory, you need to press the Controller to get to the I-Menu ---> Select 'Service Info' ---> Select 'Front/Rear Brakes'
This will display the usable miles left on the brakes.

If a brake job is not due soon, you will need to take the car to the dealer and complain like mad for them to either adjust the Brake Sensor (a service bulletin was published sometime back for, I think, MY06 or older car) or better still, perform a brake job on your car.

All the best!!!

Please could you define "whistle"?
My brakes have developed an annoying screech/squeal whenever I apply them, but I-Drive says another 6k/9k miles before front/back pads need attention. Slamming the brakes on hard to "clean" the pads/discs tends to cure the problem for a short while, before the screech returns...
Is this cause for a warranty check or replacement????

Hey guys...

I just got my car back from service last friday....i put it in becuase of the brakes.....but it seems that it is a common thing on out E60's to make the squeeking/whistling noise..and the brake dust is also common on the car. It seems that BMW uses bad brake pads and sometimes the dust itself might cause them to squeek when you apply.. Try cleaning out the pads...might work..It used to work on my OLD 02 Lexus IS300...and when the wheels got to dusty the breaks would start to squeek. I washed the car and it would work fine for a few weeks until the wheels were dirty again.
