I worked out a trade in on my 2000 328i for a 2005 545i this week. I picked it up today. Its got 41K and was a single owner lease.

I went in circles with the dealer about what they did as part of the CPO process relating to the brakes. They said that the brake rotors were replaced as part of the certification, but that the brake shoes were in good shape and didn?t need replacing. I?ve never heard of anyone doing part of a brake job like this. They said that "in good shape" meant at least 70% of the life left. I thought it was odd, but I was getting a pretty good deal ($33.5K loaded), so I closed the deal.

Then during the delivery we were going through the operation of the car and we ran across the service menu. It said to service the front brake in 11K and the rears in 17k. 11k on the fronts would be just out of the 50k warranty where they would be covered, so they would be on my dime not BMWs. Also, a relative that is pretty sharp with cars said it really isn?t a good idea to run old pads on new rotors, since it could mess up the rotors. Pad on all 4 wheels is going to be close to $900. If the rotors get trashed, that would add even more.

Is the way a CPO is supposed to work?

I could be wrong, but I really thought CPO gave you another 2 years/100k miles on the warranty and service. Why else would you pay the premium for CPO, then get taxed on it?

Regarding rotors, I just had my pads replaced due to severe squeaking. I had about 9k miles left on the front according to idrive. The dealer kept the same rotors. All is well. I've put about 1k miles on since the replacement, no problems at all.

I am quite certain that CPO includes extended warranty for 6 years/100k but not extended maintenance. If you drive a lot, purchasing extended maintenance might be worth it.

The CPO drops maintenance and the radio from coverage.

I don't drive a lot sine I have two cars. Its the time that always messes me up. If I drive 8K per year on this car, I'll be over the 4 years, but under the 50K. If the brakes are needed at 52K (according to the computer), then I'll be over the 4 years (which expires in 9 months).

They said 4 wheels of pads would be $875 parts and labor. To extend the maintenance would be $1600 or so. If I got the brakes, and a few oil changes, under the extended, I'd still need something else to get to $1600.

Anyhow, I'll keep an eye on it for a few months. My wife said I should just enjoy for a while. I agree. By brother in law blasted it to 100 on the freeway and really liked it. The relatives couldn't tell it was used. Its all good.

When I was pricing tires, I noticed that tirerack had a bunch of different brake pad options. The dealer said it was $100 per set up pads, but it looks like the aftermarket pads are less than that for 2 wheels. Are aftermarket brake pads any good?
