I had 2007 Navigation before and I downloaded both 2009.1 and 2010.1 ISOs. When I replace 2007 with 2009, system asked me to wait for 5 minutes and restart.
When 2009 is working, I replaced it with 2010 and it didn't ask me to restart or wait for 5 minutes like that. It just started working fine.

Now when I try to replace with 2009 then it asks me to wait for 5 minutes and restart.

And more over I can't see any differences between 2009 and 2010. (Most of you talking about completely new map etc.,)

And is there any way I can confirm what version is in the system now. Just to make sure it is really the 2010 I have in the car.

There really isn't that much of a difference with the 2009 and 2010...both of them actually look the same to me, except for the fact that the 2010 is on two discs....

+1 I have noticed some subtle differences here and there, again like I said previously its not earth shattering. Honestly its like getting a new phone book! Which again is why its so rediculous that a new disc every year is a couple hundred dollars for a $65k car. Id like to see some real Navigation system differences for a few hundred $$$$

To answer the question about the start and restart function of knowing you have any updated disc. I noticed that when I put my Western US DVD the 1st time, I didnt get the "restart after 5 min" notification, however when I put my eastern disc in to test it, I did get the notification, then the funny thing, is when I put the western disc back in, I got the notification..again..crazy

But I have noticed subtle changes from the previous 2009.1

It's been said many times in the thread already but the discs are just map DATA, not any graphics or interface updates - so yes it is just like phone book data. They charge hundreds of dollars because that's what Navteq/Teleatlas charge - you are just buying a BMW branded version of a 3rd party product. If there was no charge then there would be no Navteq or Teleatlas to update your maps for you.

I know that Navteq/Telatlas make the maps software for BMW's...Can there be another company or someone that can make a third party app, that updates the looks and graphics of the maps in our vehicles?

I'm sure it won't be BMW approved, but could something like that be possible?

I noticed a difference in the graphics between my old 2006 disc and the 2010. Also my subdivision roads are in the new version where as on my 2006 disc the roads weren't there at all since the area was built in 2006.
With saying that.....I can see updating every 3-4 years, but doing it every year is a waste....especially if your buying the discs

I got the Red Light Camera to work, I made a quick demonstration. Quality of Video may not be too good because of the iPhone camera but you get the point.
