If I ever need a big car I'd get a long E60, simply because I think the 7 series is ugly.

Basically it's a car for a market where the relationship between the salary of a driver and the cost of a limo is much different than in the West. We're talking countries where anyone who can afford a 5 Series can also afford to pay the salary for 3 drivers working in shifts. At the same time he wants a shiny, new car with a prestige badge and doesn't care about things like handling and engine size. He knows he's going to be sitting in the back and that's where he wants the extra room and the creature comforts. That's the target for a stretched 5. BTW - in Europe countries like the Ukraine in general have a similar mindset.

In Western Europe if you can afford to pay a driver then a 7 series is also probably within easy reach.
The E60's here cost as much as a 7 in the US or Europe.

Interesting thread.
I was not surprised that BWW decided to build a lwb E60, after seeing the success Audi has. China is the 2nd largest market for the A6 after Germany, & this car is the preferred choice for high ranking goverment officials. Note that the 'normal' A6 is not available in China.
I think BMW is also trying to convince the Chinese goverment that there are other alternatives to the A6.
This car has big market potential in markets such as India or SE Asian countries, where chauffeurs are common & sometimes a touch of discretion is desirable.

That might apply in Bahrain, it might not apply elsewhere......

There are more 7 series than 5 series in my city, country (Bangladesh). There is no way a 530Li would work. Most ppl who buy luxury cars here are 40+ years old and the young ones buy cheaper toyotas or mazda or nissan or mitsubishis. So not too many folks of my age buying BMW's, when they do they do buy the 525, 530 or the M5, the 550 will actually never sell here as luxury duty stucture makes the price very close to the M5. Here are the prices of the 5 in Bangladesh

525i-----Decent Options (SR/6CD/Comfor tseats/Memory/Leather/Active Headlights with Xenon/Stetronic,HIFI)

$110 Grand With Customs Duty Ex Showroom Price

530i----Similar options $130 Grand

530i --Individual--- $140 grand includes DVD, Merino Leather, Special Color and trim

730Li --Individual-- $160 Grand vs the $140 grand for the 530i Individual not big of a difference who is buying a car with that kinda money. I myself thought about it but then realized its WAY too much underpowered and its just too old man for my taste right now. Maybe 5 years from now I will buy a 7. but right now this 5 is perfect and a long wheel base 5 will probably work in Beijing but not elsewhere.
