don't you guys think that BMW must have a reason since starting a production? with their unlimitied budgets for marketing, research etc etc they know the best what to do? so they obviously know what are they doing.....

besides, everybody argues about 5er long vs. 7er in terms of a big car or a prestigue. But what about if someone wants a chaffeur driven limo with leg room but less obvious?? not such a eye catcher as the 7er or S class??? how about a reason for the 5er right here....

also about prices of 5er LONG vs 7er being almost the same?? I don't think so. Note that the 5er long will be made in china, therefore it will not be a pure blooded BMW as to technologies, equipment and materials used so it will be much cheaper than the imported 7er !!!

I remember there were tons of Audi A6 with only 1.8T engine in Beijing but with chauffer....... so why not stripped 520i LONG

The Skoda Superb (there's an oxymoron if ever I heard one) was based on a LWB VW Passat originally developed for the Chinese market so I can well believe BMW considering a long 5 er for this growing market especially if it helps establish the brand further.

What is about the leg room they love in that market?

We'll see if bmw decides to do it and what market sectors are targeted. It may be very well as yousa id in nr 1 post, if it will be like that who cares .Kidding...
Yes but i also don't see your point too much about the obvious stuff regarding 5erL vs 7er since one who has a chaffeur as you call it, i don't think he gives a damn on standing-out or obvious stuff. A chaffeur will get noticed, and when it does, some people might start talking "ain't that a bitch, he is rich enough to afford a driver but is cheap enough not to spend too much on a upper class bmw or whatever". That's a possibility anyway, and the way i see it.

Also about the prices, i don't think the 5L will be close to the 7. You were right about what you said, and probably that will be true if they decide to do it. But again: who would want a way lower class bmw ? (as in "technologies, equipment and materials used so it will be much cheaper ")

BetterMakeWay you just do not seem to get it.... it is not for you or the US market it is for Asia.... have you ever been there?? things are just different there.... not to say better or worst just different....
I think you are just way overjudging this concept by hard European thinking..... you are right that there is not much reason for the 5er long in Europe if made here..... but again - we are talking Chinese made and for Chinese as well.....

Absolute rubish the ideea...why buy a 5 long when you can have a 7. What would 7L owner think of your 5L . Let's be serious now, a 5 is a 4 door sedan with good (not the best) interior space, good (but not luxury) materials, and keep a very sporty character even though it's a bigger car than the 3. The L version would just not make any sense. If you want more space get the 7, if you want more luxury get the 7, if youw ant even more get the 7L. I bet that the extra length will take away some of the car dinamics....

Guys can you please stop the jokes about other's race or the region they live in, very low class IMO.

Things is different in Asia not worst. There are people in China with a chauffer driving a Buick Regal and I have been chauffer around by a Mazda 323 because a nice car is just not good in some places as it will lead people to think you are rich and a target for crime.

When you ask why the legroom, just think about if you are not driving your 535d but seating in the back seat all the time then you might want the legroom and jump to a 7 correct?

But the point is for those who are not car crazy doesn't care if they are in a 7 or a 5 as long as it is a Bimmer. So we have some strecth old E-class around as the philosophy of the buyers here is why paid more for a different Benz? A Benz is a Benz or similarly an apple is an apple doesn't matter if they eat red delicious or those Japanese ones that cost 4 times as much.

So I do see a market if they decide to produce it and I think those marketing guys at BMW are not stupid and they would need some evidence to convince BMW to produce it right (like survey and stuff) you get the picture.

Also, FYI Bimmers or Audi that is build in China is the same price as the ones that we get in HK and don't forget 75% of our car's price is taxed so building it in China doesn't neccesarily means it will be cheaper for the consumers.

Another myth to clear up here is those cars that are build in China is not neccessarily lower grades, I think BMW AG would be very concern about their brand name that they have build up over the years and China is a big market so I don't think BMW will build some lower quality cars if they want a market share in the luxury car segment that MB have dominated for so long.

that car would no way make it in the market....if a guy wants a big car he buys the 7series...there are more 7s here than 5s......and anybody wanting more legroom would buy a 7...and the 5 is a very smal portion of the market here.less than 7s, 3s, x5s....people like big cars...and we dont have a problem with fuel prices.....i see absolutely no future in this car....
That's why our fuel price is so high, because people producing it is benefitting from our pain. You guys have no idea how much we have to pay for our fuel. I think you make this comment because you are in Bahrain your whole life and doesn't have a clue of the outside world (or you do but you are just laughing at those who needs to pay a premium for their fuel) I don't blame you but I felt sorry for you man.
