Between a 545 and an E46 M3 convertible, I'd put my money on the 545.

Joe had me run in his car once against a slightly modded e46. e46 won, but also had the jump, but the e46 couldnt leave me. Joe said if I had launched sooner, it would probably be even or I might have pulled a little if we went for longer.

Well, this thread has surprised me. I would have thought the E46 M3 with more BHP and less weight would win it by a comfortable margin. I'm not saying I think y'all are wrong, what do I know. Then again, if the M3 only had manual gearbox available then it has no chance with such an impediment. No way of keeping up with the slick E60 auto/smg shifts unless you really hated your E46 and wanted to bring the gearbox to the scrapyard.

I agree that the M3 does have more BHP and the 0-60 is 0.2 secs faster. But wouldn't the 545 take it after that??

I don't see any reason why the 545 should overtake later in the race. If it were heavier but had 400bhp, then you can see why it would lose off the line due to weight but then the power would make it overtake the M3 after a certain point. But if it loses off the line due to weight and has less power (even if it's only 10BHP less), why should it come back and take it?

I believe both cars weight in the 3700 lb category and M3 has about 10 more HP but at 8500rpm.
there are plenty threads about 545i/550i vs m3.... some of them:
