If you are in a serious accident, does BMW Assist automatically call for help? I'm thinking of the recent GM adverts in the USA, where a guy hits a tree and his OnStar calls for the police. If it did, that might push me toward renewing the Asssist program. Otherwise, cell phone plus AAA or insurance is enough....
Yes, any accident that causes deployment of an airbag will automatically activate BMW Assist. If the accident doesn't activate the airbag, then you have to use the SOS button to activate BMW Assist.

Personally I think it's worth it just in case I'm in a serious accident and can't call. There are a lot of wooded two-lane roads here in Georgia where you could go days without someone knowing you're there if you run off the road.
