You are correct, 100%.....any "other" dealer will be able to help you & do a proper alignment with 19" rims, even with your replicas. BMW techs don't always know what they are talking about.....sorry to say. Rudy will agree with me...as well as most other members on here. Good luck!
Yes, I agree that some BMW techs (as well as some dealerships) can be clueless which is why I (as well as a few others) advised pk8813 to find another dealer.

BTW, pk8813, I'm glad you took my initial advice and posted this question publically (after first sending me the question via PM) -- see what I mean about how many responses you'd get? Kudos to the forum for helping out our newbie pk8813!

How do you know he doesn't have "proper" alignment holes? Even though they are replicas, they could still have the proper 5 alignment holes, just not like the holes we are all used to seeing on typical E60 OEM's. You can't tell from the pic he posted. Look carefully at the OEM & replica M6 167 wheels....there ARE alignment holes. PK8813, do your wheels look like the replicas I found below on eBay...with the 5 smaller openings/holes next to the larger lug holes?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/19-BMW-M6-W...sspagenameZWDVW
If so, the HUNTER alignment system BMW uses will work. I have CSL M3 replicas on my 530xi and the Hunter wheel alignment "fingers" fit perfectly. My dealer NEVER gave me problems because they were replicas, and they've aligned my car 6 times (due to some vibration/tire issues and the fact I had lowering springs installed). They never once even brought up the wheels as being a problem or issue, and they DO know they are replicas. Granted, I don't have active steering, but either way it shouldn't matter at all re: your wheel situation. IMO, Your dealer is full of crap!
Dude seriously, how do you expect me to know all that, the only info I have is the info in this thread, and that pic that he provided showed no proper alignment holes.

My dealer is full of crap? You don't even know where I work. Try thinking a little before you post.

You guys are all off base on alignments. Alignments are one of the best paying "gravy" jobs a Tech can get. The only way a Tech worth anything would turn down an alignment is if there is a legitimate reason it cannot be done, or something that would prevent said Tech from not getting paid properly by warranty.

He was referring to the original poster's (pk8813's) dealer, not the dealer that you work at.

Well if that is the case then it's my mistake and I apologize for the misunderstanding.

hello ,

I just joined this forum yesterday , i have 2004 545i with the sports package, i had the active steering failed and had to take it to the dealer , after doing the diagnosis the dealer wanted me to change all 4 tires and all 4 wheels , i did so and got the Khumo Escata SPT and 19 inch M5 wheels (OEM), Today i took it to the dealer and he said the wheels are not 18inch as recommended by BMW and he cant even touch the car and it will be a waste of his time.
I offered to pay for the Allignment and active steering control problem and he was a jerk and said sorry and walked away this is ridiculous and i am not sure where to go from here......
can one of u experts help me on this
I just read through this thread and am amazed. I posted about a month ago that I had an Active Steering fault code (that comes on about 5 minutes after I am driving, everytime I stop and restart). I posted here, mistakenly calling it "Assisted" steering in the headline, which I could not change in editing. But anyway, about 4-5 days later, I pick up the phone to have a BMWNA service rep talking to me (read the post here) and urging me to get to the dealer immediately.

We chatted a bit and I told him that there was no physical steering difference when the alarm sounded, and that, given this car's awful track record on false alarm faults, I was planning to hold off until my oil change. He said that was up to me, but wanted to be sure that I got it taken care of. They obviously treat this symptom VERY SERIOUSLY.

Yours, on the other hand, DOES physically change steering and I would NOT hesitate to get it somewhere right away. The business about ordering you to get new tires before they work on it is utterly BS. If you haven't gotten satisfaction yet, I'd call BMWNA again, and simply say that you have a troubling, dangerous fault code and your dealer is BSing you. Then, tell them that you complied with his ridiculous order and now he's stonewalling you again. He is digging his hole deeper, and you may just want to go to another dealer and I would suggest that you have BMWNA alert that dealer to your incoming service need.

Whatever, please don't wait, this could be serious stuff. And you don't want to think about what that system would cost out of warranty!

FWIW, I've been riding my new BMW K1200 GT motorcycle for 400 miles with the brake system failure light on. They assured me that it's a gitch, but it's finally going in tomorrow.

Good luck,
Ray

i Spoke to BMWNA and they checked withthe dealer and simple came up with the answer that since these are not BMW wheels my dealer does not have the setup to perform any allignement related tasks or for the matter of fact the ACtive steering was directly related to the wheels and the dealer ship doesnt have the setup to do it...

i am getting fed up with BMW
i have a 330 before i never had these kind of problems...................Grrrrrr!!!
