I thought it might be the gas too. I've always used premium, but took a little more care of the brand I used. Made no difference. The rough idle does seem more noticeable in the cold though, so does the "diesel sound" between 1-2k rpm. But they show up in the warmer months too. I guess they just don't show when the BMW rep stops by to check it out.

My now gone 545i had rough idle when cold/half warm.
The entire car shook sometimes and one always could feel it with the buttmeter.
The colder it was outside, the worse it got.
I think they never really belived me.........

Heres a thought. MINIs have been known for occasional rough idle in idle at a light and will go away if you blip the throttle in neutral a few times when it happens.

A few people reported that they made the rough idle go away by filling up once with Chevron regular gas! Regular 87 octane and then after go back to Premium gas.

*shrugs*

Sorry to see you have this problem. My 545i has always been smooth as silk at idle.

My '05 545 (Nov '04 build) has the same problem. I'll be taking it in soon.

Had the same problem last year, and they temporarily solved it by adjusting the valves (by SA made it sound like it was a known issue with this engine).

NOTE: I have manual tranny, not Step.

Same issue here. Less pronounced with latest software updates, but something that has been inherent to the vehicle since it was new.

I have an 05 545i 10/04 build. My car does the same exact thing while idling in park or drive. This is my first bmw, I expected so much more from the car. I'm in the process of trying to get a buy back from my dealer. Good luck with your case.
