Aren't parts ordered by VIN?
Are BMW parts ordered by VIN?
When the dealer needed to replace my peeling shift knob, they ordered the wrong one which necessated another appointment, then today, they had to jack up the car, probably scratching the lower sideskirt when they needed to get the part number of the wheel they gouged.
When I had MB's, everything was ordered by VIN. Not so for BMW?

Secondly, The shift knob is such a generic item so the designation "E60" is enough to order the correct part. For items that change by year or multiple suppliers used then the BMW dealers are using the VIN to order parts.

Firstly, I will be very surprized if the dealer told you they have to lift the car for replacing the shift knob. The shift knob is being taken out will a simple pull. If they told you they lifted the car for that reason then you should be running away from this dealer.

Anyway, the shift knobs are totally generic and they can order from theit parts catalogue by just looking at the shape and type. Are they hiding something from you??

Sounds like two different issues. First the shift knob, other posters are correct, it's a generic part and does not require VIN number to order (or shouldn't). As for the wheel they gouged, they had to lift the car to get the part number? I assume it is a non BMW wheel. Assuming they actually gouged the wheel, then did further damage lifting the car, the dealer should repair both the wheel and the sideskirt.
Sorry, didn't read the part about the wheel. Anyway, its really weird to have to look at the part number for the rims too.... maybe you shouldn't let them repair the damage as they have not lifted the car again to look at the part number for the sideskirt..
Thanks for your replies everyone.
The car is 100% stock, just as it left the factory so that's why I asked but now that I think of it, BMW does offer different wheels and shift knobs as accessories.
