I went from a E39 to a 7. Hope this helps. I love the interior room of the 7. The back of the E39 always fealt cramped to me.

My Ride: 745i Sport package, 21" staggered chrome 128's 255 fr 295 rr, Alpine white... the only color for the e65
Sunny the white 550 is awesome, that would be my next choice, i also found a white on black 645 sport fully loaded cpo'd not to far from me...... maybe well both change...

Prior to 2000, I had Lexus's - 1993 SC400, 1998 LS400, 1999 RX300 and a 2002 RX300. In 2000 I traded the LS400 on a 2000 540i. Traded that on a 2000 M5. Don't even consider a Lexus LS460 unless you want a numb feeling, poor handling boat. BMWs are much more satisfying to own and drive, and more problematic to maintain.
More on point, I went from the M5 to the 2003 745li and was really disappointed. Besides having numereous problems with the 7, it was't nearly as responsive as the 5 series. While the room in the gback was nice, I always felt like i was driving a boat. I gave it to my wife and used her 3 series.
My advice is to go with the 550i. It has adequate power, handles well with the sport pkg. and has adequate room for my needs.
