You might find, as I did, that at 1,000 rpm (which might seem low) you start to feel a bit uncomfortable about what you might be doing to your car with your foot on the brake. I certainly don't ever plan to try it with more than 1k rpm.
I've launched it at 2500rpm before.

Launch a car ... you mean like this? Video here

Or like this? Video here.

Those guys now working on the Iranian rocket programme (i hope) . On a sad note what a waste of a nice little runabout, surely they could have used a shitty smart car or something maybe a PT Cruiser (ugliest car i have ever seen).

I guess it comes down to do you have a spare ?1-2K if you break the autobox, I dont at the moment so I might not try it.
With an automatic transmission, it's going to be pretty hard to do serious damage through moderately aggressive launching. The car won't let you rev too high when you are at rest and in gear with your foot on the brake pedal, just as the Steptronic software won't let you downshift (manually or with kickdown) if to do so would put the transmission at risk. Sure, you're going to be a little harder on the transmission this way, and that carries a consequential risk in terms of additionl wear and tear, but you can't really "damage" the Steptronic drivetrain the way you can a regular manual transmission and clutch. In short, if the car will let you do it, you're probably not going to break it. By and large, these aren't fragile cars and they're designed and engineered to be hammered from time to time. Personally, I consider the occasional "Italian tune-up" to be preventative maintenance.

Damn it, now i want to try it but the roads are too busy most of the time here.

I am tempted now, my car does have outstanding acceleration without doing this once it gets going.

Live a little! Once in a while really should do no harm at all. As you say, the car's plenty quick already without the need to behave too badly
