It also depends on how old you are and which type of woman you are trying to atrract / impress.
A fully loaded 330i with Sports Package or M3 gets more looks from the younger crowd of women, than a 5 series does. The 3 series is simply a great vehicle for the younger crowd. It is also more fun to drive than a 530 and exudes youth.
The 5 series is also great, but it's geared towards the older crowd like me (30+), there are exceptions of course with younger owners, but that is why they are called exceptions (not the majority).
If you have buddies to drive around, the 3 series is cramped in the back, but like you said you usually drive it alone, so who cares.
Now if you are thinking about the 550i, then that is a no brainer, you need to get it no matter what!

My Ride: 05 525 Sapphire Black
Am (mostly) single and recently bought an e60. Waited for the new 3 to come out and was going to buy a 330i but ended up trading my e46 on a 525i which was roughly the same price as the 3 ($100k here in OZ!). The 5 better suits my relaxed driving style (though not yet relaxed enough for a Merc which I also considered ). Unlike some guys here, the 5 actually seems a little too large for me but then I am a pretty small guy at 5'4".
An anecdote - when I first drove it into my regular carpark the young attendant innocently asked me if I "have my parents' car today" since he usually saw me arrive in my e46!... maybe he thought I couldn't afford an e60? Was to young? Too Small? Too casual? Anyway I don't care if someone thinks the car is my Dad's (I actually told the carpark attendant "yes it is" fearing being crossexamined as to why I chose it, how much, blah blah, chitter chatter from a relative stranger)... love this car and it makes ME happy which is why I bought it!... for ME ME ME

im usually alone 80% of the time.... i am married and wife is soon to deliver anyday now.... i chose the car not only for the style and charisma it has but also the room for a newbie babie... i just recently purchased a car seat and placed it in the car to check it out... it is a bit oversized car seat larger than most car seats, i still have plenty of room in the car to pack 2+baby in the back..anywyas 34 and married..... eric d

Ya. I hate driving others. Too much bitching and if its driving multiple people they mess around and bother / annoy me. Alone I can drive how I want to drive listen to what I want to listen to keep the car as clean and neat as I want to keep it.
Why I buy a 5 seater then? Cuz I like it.
