Have replaced coolant pipe, rear of the engine coolant pan/gasket, oil cooler plate gasket, valve cover and upper timing cover gaskets along with the usual tires and brakes etc. cleared the secondary air injection ports.
Now smokes at idle and is drawing oil into the intake..

Bought mine at 95k, currently at 138k. Previous owner appears to have had the self adjusting clutch shit the bed at 30k, and a very interesting intermediate prop shaft failure (splines stripped) at 110k that I think was a result of poor service work at the time of the SAC replacement. Once I remedied that, I've not had any issues.
My E39 525iT went 230k before I sold it.

My Ride: 2008 BMW 535i
I have an '08 535i auto with just over 111k miles on it. I bought it with 78k miles. It runs great but here is the work that I've done on it to prep it for the next 100k miles:
Replaced front wheel bearings
Replaced fuel injectors (newest ones that are rock solid), coils and spark plugs
Replaced brake pads and rotors all around
Replaced transmission filter/pan and replaced oil
Replaced one engine mount
Replaced one fuse
Replaced one xenon light unit
Replaced both turbos for wastegate issue (under warranty from BMW)
Replaced vacuum lines for turbo
Replaced both hood struts
Flushed brake fluid
Flushed power steering fluid
Replace oil cooler and oil pump gasket
Replaced VANOSgasket rings
Replaced water pump
Change rear differential fluid
Replaced belt tensioner and serpentine belt
A/C Service
Rislone oil treatment (to quieten down valve noise)
Things to do in immediate future
Walnut blasting engine because of buildup (downside of direct injection)
Still averages 29 mpg at 80 mph/130 kph.
Regular service and fluid flushes are the best preventative things we can do with the car. Although it may seem expensive to keep them running well, it's a lot cheaper than poor maintenance and having to fix big things later.
These are very complex beasts but when running good, they are a dream to drive.
I hope to drive it another 100k miles.

My Ride: 08 535xi
I have over 100k on my 08 535xi. So far I've had
3 HPFP, all under dealer warranty
1 new set of injectors
1 water pump and thermostat
I follow mike millers service schedule for all fluids. (except trans which i did late at 90k)
oil changes every 7500 miles
Things I know are gonna need work,
walnut blasting/ oil catch can
wheel bearings
suspension bushings
struts
leaking oil filter housing
small valve cover leak
turbos
trans solenoids
belts
a/c recharge
Coils are gonna go at some point.
But like most cars with over 100k regular maintenance and care will keep you up an running.
I also don't baby this car on the road.
Overall if you can do the work, these cars are amazing. I spent the time to learn my way around INPA and the like of software which makes my job 10 times easier and cheaper.

My Ride: 2008 bmw 535i
129k on my 08 535i, I'm experiencing transmission malfunction. It drives nice in cold weather for about an hour, when I pull up to a stop sign, it goes in park by itself, I have to turn it off an on again for it to move. It does the same thing when I put it reverse, it engages and goes by in park. Can anyone help?

Have you ever drained the transmission fluid in this 535i? If you have not, this could be the cause of your problem. The ZF transmission in your 535 has very tight tolerances. If the fluid is not clear and fresh it will not shift correctly. My 530XI suffered from the "first gear slam" phenomena. I changed the ZF-Lifeguard fluid and it was better than new.
Side note: You have to use the ZF-Lifeguard fluid specified for your vehicle's transmission. There are no substitutes! The fluid bottle instructions read to "shake well" to make my point. No Joke.
My guess is that the fluid in your transmission is the color of tar instead of clear.
