163k miles on my '04 545i SMG. Original owner. I change diff and trans fluid every 50k, engine oil about 8k. SMG and PS fluid when I think about it. Notable failures have been SMG pump and A/C compressor. Had a few fairly expensive oil leaks, and that coolant pipe through the valley costs a fortune to fix. The original brakes did 162k, and I'm still on the original clutch. The front sway bar (active suspension) has been seeping for a while; maybe I'll fix it soon. Nothing else is currently wrong with it. Oh, and the i-Drive sometimes doesn't boot right, but <Ctrl><Alt><Delete> fixes it.

BMW says no, but after the warranty ends they don't care. Conventional wisdom says yes, whether it's manual or auto. Cost is a drop in the ocean compared to the other costs of ownership of these cars.

I see that there are a lot of post asking if they should flush the transmission. I think the correct term is drain. I would not flush these transmissions. A drain is enough. Another thing you can do is replace the pan and/filter depending on the year you have. A good period is every 35000 to 60000 which ever mileage you feel comfortable with. I had my first drain around 75000 with the pan being replaced. Since then I have had one drain and im at 105000. Do not forget about having the differential fluid drained and replaced also.

I don't know about 35k miles, but I did do my trans fluid change and diff oil change around 75k miles. The whole idea of "lifetime" oil to me sounds like a joke. Better to do whatever maintenance you can do before you end up replacing components

Just hit 93k. Since the maintenance ran out Ive only had to do oil changes, replace the oil filter housing gaskets because of a nasty leak, power steering fluid drain and fill and coolant flush. Im gonna throw on the spark plugs today and I have some super blue on the way to do the brakes.
