Totally new Valeo ordered from Autohauz AZ for $340. No more rebuilds for me! Bad part is the car is totally down now and I need to wait for UPS.
This couldn't be more messy. Autohauz AZ dragged their feet on filling my order so I searched and found a better deal locally, here: http://www.buyautoparts.com/addtocar.../31-00179.html

I cancelled the Autohauz AZ order and am picking up the local one in a couple hours. The customer service guy at Buy Auto Parts was great and they have a much best price.

New Valeo alternator installed and makes 14.1 Volts continuously. I'll never buy an MPA Quality Built re-manufactured product again. I took apart theirs and found that they had re-used the original regulator, but they had broken off the plastic commutator brush cover, removed the old brushes and soldered new ones in their place. Stupid & cheap. With so many regulator failures, they should have just replaced the whole regulator/brush assembly even if they had to charge more. I couldn't figure out what had made the squealing noise that eventually went away, but I wouldn't be surprised if a bearing was failing too. They claim they do all sorts of bench testing under load, but I can't imagine this one had been tested very thoroughly. To the recycler with that POS!
