But then how will the battery charge for it to start?

There is a main wiring harness that runs from the battery to the engine with every major module and sensor attached to it... the Active Steering Module is directly under your knees when you sit in the passenger seat. Any moisture at all will cause the malfunction - I just had that module, the ARS sensor and the wiring harness replaced.

Assuming that the battery is fully charge, process of elimination would be the module next. My only experience with this issue arose from leaving my car with an Autobody shop for over two weeks. I experience active steering malfunction but went away when the battery was recharge to 80% capacity. That is why I now use a battery tender. These system modules are so sophisicated.

Any moisture in the cabin should be avoided, that is why I don't bother to steam clean the carpet and use the rubber all season mats. I even refrain from cleaning the engine bay.

+1, since we're on the topic of moisture in the cabin, I've noticed small wet stains on the headliner by the doors, I'm guessing the drains are clogged would anyone be able to point me the right direction as to how to clean them?

Unfortunately mine wasnt from "moisture" per se.... my storm drains were clogged and the ebox flooded and backed up into the passenger compartment! Ugh what a nightmare... anyway its over now and insurance paid for a whole lot of new shit ($12.5k later!!). Wont bore you all with details - I have a thread about it here somewhere... anyway, got it back and its like new.

GL with your issue.

Maybe you start a new thread for this.

wow thanks for the input everyone, best replies ive gotten on here so fast.at least i have 2 very prominent issues from what others have already stated, i know the battery can drop significantly because the warning on my radar will go off when i turn to key on sometimes that its having low battery voltage, and also this issue has been happening for 3 weeks or so and it has been constant rain every single one of those days.

so i will replace the battery and also check for excessive moisture on or around the module. thanks again everyone ill keep you posted on my progress.

An old, well discussed, E60 issue, IMO. However controversial...

Vehicle rests for a few days. Battery drains. Typical response is disabled active steering, clock, trip odo, mph and mpg zero. Steering will recover in a few revs.
