Correction the mean ratio for E60 5 series models from 2004 thru 2005 is 14.1:1 on none active steering models and did not come with servotronic. on the new 2006 models they changed the steering from the first two model years. The mean Ratio is now 13.7:1 and comes Standard with Servotronic on none active steering models. Servotronic could only be had with Active Steering in 2004 and 2005, but not on the regular steering. Servotronic is now standard on all 2006+ E60 models.

Try it yourself. Get a demo car with AS and find out if you like it.
Some ppl love it, some hate it.

It is definately more than just a parking aid! It is a safety feature.

It was last years "innovation of the year" and all car manufacturers are now copying it!

Amen. AS is not a "parking aide", for goodness sake. What it does is give a sense of incredible quick and responsive steering- more like a Porsche Boxster if you've driven one. TRY IT! If you don't like it- fine; no harm done. But don't run the risk of making a mistake with your $70k car by missing out on something you really wish you'd gotten.

You're preaching to the choir...AS is a great innovation, one that more makers will undoubtledly copy and interpret. Every time I get in my wifes MDX, I am momentarily taken back as to why I'm turning the wheel so much more.

As I've stated before , of all the wonderful attributes the E60 has, AS is one of the most significant .

I am currently planning not to get AS. Am I making a mistake? Is not the steering on the 5 series still perfect without it other than making parking lot driving easier.

I am trying to cut back somewhere (this seems to be one of the few cutbacks). My 550i spec with sport pac, permium sound, sat. radio, sun shades, m aero kit, comfort seats, comfort access, navigation, and head-up display is already over $70,000 MSRP.? ? ?

No question step up and load up the critical options. AS being one. I , for one, am glad I didnt have to decide on my 2005. At the end of the day, you wont remember how much more you may have spent, instead will be enjoying the fruits of this forums labor and trial and error; PLUS your buy in

I definitely wanted this option on the car. I drove several different cars before deciding on this one. I park in an underground garage at the office, and it is sooo convenient.

Hmmm. No negative comments about AS. I will give it more consideration. I have driven it. It was very nice - kinda wierd. I almost drove into the curb on my first turn, but I got used to it pretty quickly. It really made it easy to maneuver. That was on a 2005 545 about 6 months ago. The things I have read, like in the recent motor trend and older issues of auto mags talked about the change in steering ratio decelerating in curves causing lack of steering feel and loss of control when running at 10/10ths of the cars performance. Although I love to drive aggessively, I will never drive at 10/10ths of the performance envelope in this car. I don't have a problem with my e39 steering so my thinking is it is not a big deal to do without.

I would think the non AS 5 series still has good steering though. Do some of you regret not getting it?

Thanks for the feedback.

I really enjoy it. I go back and forth from a 5 to a Nissan Pickup. It is night and day in all aspects. It really does give you an appreciation about what you have and don't. My wife also wishes you had the smoothness of steering in her little Scion xB. I have to say it will always be something I look for in future vehicles.
