As i am stuck without a car for a week, i have decided to borrow a relatives 2006 730ld. I have noticed that this car along with another friends 2003 730d has a 8 way IDRIVE menu. So you get an extra 4 menu's and you access these by pointing the idrive contoller diagonally.
This seems a little more interesting then the E60 4 way menu i will be getting in my 535d which i am taking delivery 01/09/06.
Is there any way i can get this IDRIVE Menu or is it only available for the 7er? cheers

I dont think this is available for 5 series. I thought when I drive came on the market on the 7 series, people find it an annoying, difficult to use interface. So BMW designed a simplified version for the 5 which should be more user-friendly.
I personally think an I drive with the 4 standard buttons with an extra 4 customizable would be an excellent idea.

The iDrive on the upcoming E70 X5 looks like it has some nice improvements, including 8 user programmable buttons for audio, phone, NAV Address book, and other funcions. Each of these 8 physical switches has a text/graphic representation on the bottom of the iDrive screen.

The 8-way iDrive was a disaster.
It was too difficult to pull the iDrive knob on the diagonal without accidentally going into one of the adjacent menu's by mistake.
That is why they went to 4-way on the E60. It was just easier to navigate through the menu's without making mistakes.
