I own a 2005 530i with 65k miles. I noticed that when I'm at a stop and have to put the car into first I would say at least half the time I goes in rough or I have to shift down to second and back up to 1st gear. Of course if the car is at a slow roll it goes into 1 easy. I have no other problems with the other gears. My previous car was new when I bought it (mazda 3) and I don't remember having that issue. Any suggestions???

thanks

Sign of the clutch starting to play up maybe ????? stick it in a high gear and floor it, see if it slips a little ?

Or apply your parking brake fully and try to pull away in 3rd, it should stall pretty quickly and easy if your handbrake is adjusted properly.

Sounds like you're rolling in neutral or with the clutch disengaged after you stop. If you stay stopped and not roll, and then get into 1st, it should be fine. The gear synchros get out of sync if you roll. Shifting into 2 before 1 will resync, as you found out.

I have a 6MT 06 and I don't have a problem getting it into first. Try what the first two have explained....

Quick question for you though, when you are at a stop, do you feel the car shaking? Not violently but notice shake from side to side? I'm thinking b/c its a manual, but I don't think it suppose to shake the whole car.

I do put the car in neutral as I approach a red light but when I am at a full stop and then try to go to 1st, that is when I have a problem. Again, it's not always but it's often enough. If the car is still rolling and traffic starts to move again it always goes back into 1st no problem. My question is, is that normal?

All other gears are fine and no slippage.

thanks.

Is is a problem at all temperatures? With Porsche's manual transmissions we sometimes get a similar issue when the car is cold, but it goes away as the drivetrain warms up. Is yours playing up all the time?

With a 325i and all other cars I've had with a manual gearbox I'm already in first when I come to a stop, that is I'm downshifting as I slow my car to a stop. I don't skip gears in either direction.

I'm having the same problem on mine. I complained and, of course, "problem could not be replicated." hopefully it will get worse before my CPO runs out and they'll actually fix it.

There is no difference if the car is warmed up or not. As one of the posts replied, I could downshift but you'd think with a car like this I wouldn't have too. For now I'll live with it and when or if it gets worse take it to BMW. Just wanted to see if anybody had the same issue... Thanks.

i've driven manual cars all my life and had the same problem with all of them. it's natural and there's nothing wrong with the car, you just have to get use to putting it into 2nd and then 1st.

what i do is: press clutch, shift to 2nd, shift to 1st, release clutch
