i've driven manual cars all my life and had the same problem with all of them. it's natural and there's nothing wrong with the car, you just have to get use to putting it into 2nd and then 1st.

what i do is: press clutch, shift to 2nd, shift to 1st, release clutch
Sounds good, thanks.

also, if you're going at a certain speed it's not going to let you get it into 1st.

I do put the car in neutral as I approach a red light but when I am at a full stop and then try to go to 1st, that is when I have a problem. Again, it's not always but it's often enough. If the car is still rolling and traffic starts to move again it always goes back into 1st no problem. My question is, is that normal?

All other gears are fine and no slippage.

thanks.
Why would you put the car in neutral when approaching a red light?
The car is using no fuel if you are still in gear without pressing the clutch, it will use some if you put it in neutral.
So keep it in second until you really have to stop completely, disengage and put it in first.

I don't have that problem ... approaching a red light, the lowest gear I downshift to is 2d. Once stopped, I shift to first.

Same exact problem here with my 07 525i, and I don't usually downshift as I'm approaching a stop. I think that if you begin to not skip any gears, then the problem might rid itself, who knows, but I don't think there is anything wrong with your transmission.

I have a 6MT 06 and I don't have a problem getting it into first. Try what the first two have explained....

Quick question for you though, when you are at a stop, do you feel the car shaking? Not violently but notice shake from side to side? I'm thinking b/c its a manual, but I don't think it suppose to shake the whole car.

I had the same problem with my car. I actually post the problem in this forum about a month ago. How long do you own the car ?

It happened 3 times in 4 weeks on mine but from then i haven't be able to replicated it even once and never occured again.
My car is an 06 but has 4k on it. I sincerely think it's not a clutch issue.

It actually happenned to me at all temperatures as welll.
What i have noticed though is that the 1st almost every time gets more "notchy" than normal to engage when -on full stop- and on an incline.

i have the same issue, and it also happens sometimes going into reverse. From reading the replies in this thread it seems like you guys are saying its not a mechanical issue ?should i just learn to live with it or will this lead to problems in the future? im out of warranty in 25k miles. just for the record ive brought it up with my SA on many occassions and he stated cant do anything about it since it cant be replicated.

I did not have a chance to read through all the comments to view your replies , but do you tend to drive the car hard? a friend of mine who was a service adviser said the oem stock clutch should last a good 150k.
Other then that , did you happen to use a valet service around the time you started to notice this problem? You know those valets guys fuck around with cars all the time...

good luck man!
