Where can you get above 155 in california? You'd struggle to reach that even on a racetrack wouldn't you?

You should be able to hit that on the front straight at Willow Springs International given a big enough pair.

As much as I'd love to think an M5 can match the lap time of a Carrera S, I'm very skeptical about it also. On the other hand, I do think I'd have a pretty good chance if I did a rolling start against the 911 from say 50mph to 170mph.

...just follow the vid in this thread: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e63-bmw-m...-carrera-s.html

I cant post the youtube link since im at work, but what you'll see is the m6 vs 997S 0-160 and its not even close

And on another day the position may well be reversed, of course. Who knows. Two things are clear - the M5/M6 does have an HP advantage that translates to a higher top speed (assuming you de-restrict) but conversely 4000lbs is 4000lbs, and that puts the M6 at disadvantage in terms of handling and agility on the road and on the track. The lighter weight is one reason why the 997 S was able to lap the TG track in the wet in the same time as the M5 in the dry, and why it posted the win in the Top Gear comparison test with the M6 and Aston Martin Vantage that Cattman posted. Your video shows a win for the M6 in one acceleration test. Not saying one is better than the other, but there will always be circumstances where a 997 and an M6 has can claim some advantage over the other, and we're generally talking a trade off between straight line speed and handling/agility. One final point is that the M6 is, of course, much easier to drive fast due to the automated shifting in the SMG. A manual 997 will lose a bit in straight line as the driver has to do more than push a button to shift. The 997 is now available with PDK, it shifts even quicker than SMG - and it's posting some incredible times as a result.

...hey, thats 3909lbs, thank you!!!!

i luv both cars, and they both are really different types of cars, each with stronger and weaker points, and i cant wait to feel pdk and the next dkg that eventually gets into the next gen of the M6/M5s....but something must be said for the V10s howl and roars it makes you quickly forget any other deficiencies

I'm pretty sure the new 997S with 385hp and PDK will give the M5 and even M6 a run for it's money on the high end.

But hey, I had always thought the M6 was 200lbs lighter than the M5 but it's actually 103lbs?? (4012-3909) In that case, my car is probably lighter than a stock M6 now. haha

Dead on, both wonderful cars (actually make three great cars along with the M5!)

I agree the V10 sounds awesome. If there's one thing I'd change on my 997 it'd be the exhaust note. It's great, but it could be louder and angrier. Easy to address with nothing more than a muffler swap, but I wish it were maybe a little more aggressive from the factory.

I am seriously considering buying a Porsche 997 C4S Cab and would like your take on how you like it compared to the older 996's. I sold my old 996 C4S Cab last year and have been wanting to replace it with either a 997 model or a BMW M6. how do you like your 997 and what made you decide on getting the 997 over a M5/M6. I just can't live without a P-car!

Yeah swajames was talking to a few of us at a previous dinner meet about pricing for a 2008 vs a 2009 M5 and we for sure thought he was trading in his '07 997 for the M5 until he emailed us a week later saying he picked up an '08 997 C2S Cab. Threw us for a loop. hahaha

If you can't live without a P-car, I think you've already made up your mind.

For me personally, I've always loved 4-dr sports sedans and although I've always wanted a Porsche I think I would have to have both and can't give up the M5. Need to go donate some blood for extra money.
