Just get one Mike. The joy you get from driving one will overshadow all your worries about gas and insurance.

I used to have an 06 550 and compared to my current 08 M5, here are the main things that stand out for me (price of admission and insurance/operating costs do not apply) ...

1. V10 obviously has the power but isn't as torquey/responsive at low revs vs the V8

2. V10 mileage is 10 city / 19 hwy vs the V8's at 17 city / 25 hwy

3. M5 suspension is much stiffer than the 550 so ride comfort is slightly rougher

4. 550 was too quiet and even with a Dinan exhaust, it still didn't sound aggressive enough ... but a V10 with a Dinan exhaust screams POWERRRR

5. Rear tires disappear in 7500 miles in the M5 vs 15000 miles in the 550; front tires will last twice as long as the rears

6. 550 with ARS was great in the corners but always 'wiggled' abruptly off-center when driving through heavy crosswinds; M5 doesn't exhibit this problem at all (thankfully) since M5's do not have ARS

+1, the feeling of obtaining an M5 is "PRICELESS"

Interested to know how a 550 is more practical than an M5. I would have thought all E60s are equally practical.

That's an easy one. The 550 visited the pumps every 7 to 10 days. The M5 sees the pump every 3-4 days. Take a road trip from the Bay Area to LA and you'll gas up once before you hit LA in the 550. But in my first trip to LA in the M5... I refueled twice.

Bottom line - the M5 is a luxury race car for 5. The 550 is luxury car for 5.

Well, yeah there's that. I wasn't thinking about that in terms of practicality.

I used to visit the pump every 2 days and occassionally even the same day.

Plenty of four-seater small cars from Toyota and Volkswagen that are cheaper, better looking and get better mileage than a Smart
