I take my 2007 550i with 46k miles to dealer due to my service engine light.
They call to keep it overnight as they have to change the thermostat and check the radiator. Ahhhh! Anyone have this issue?

Have you ever get overheating warning before this? I would not think the thermostat and radiator will direct trigger the check engine light... However, if the two above mentioned having problem, most likely it will get engine overheat and trigger check engine.
If the true problem happens in the above two parts, overheat will be first before trigger check engine light, by that time I'd think damage already been done.
Another possibility is the minor overheating cause mis-fire .... hence the check engine, but I'd not feel it is happening.
The higher chances is the Oxygen Sensor went south.... My previous 540i consumes first set of Oxygen Sensor just right out of warranty. ( 53K miles )

I got no other warnings other than the check engine light. No symptoms either. Nada. I have asked the service tech the specific code that caused the check engine light, if we tells me I will update this thread.

Ok, rep called and said the fault was the thermostat sticking. Said nothing to worry about that these cars are monitored so closely that these problems are fixed prior to major issues. No signs of any engine overheating. (btw, I couldnt find a temp reading anywhere in the instruments or idrive. The 335i rental I have has a temp gauge.

There is no temp gauge. Though some trick button sequences can make it show up in the display. Google is your friend if you want to know how.
I don't believe thermostat sticking will trigger check engine light directly. Anyway, as people mentioned, at this mileage ( right before warrant expire ), the more parts you get, you less you need to spend later. However, I personally don't like dealer techs touch my car .... but we have no choice sometimes.
Good side is you get more new parts in the car. Bad side is that the more stuff they replace, means either they want to make more $$ from BMW NA or they lake of trouble shooting skill, just keep replacing stuff. In later case, their work quality might in question too.

I had my 07 550 in the shop 2 weeks ago for the same fault.
I have just over 9000 miles on mine and I have had 3 check engine light errors in the past year.
The first two were exhaust sensors, and this one was a thermostat. My dealer told me it was an intermittant thermostat that was sticking once in a while and they replaced.
I also had a error with my Tire Pressure Monitor although all four tires were green on the screen. Turned out I had water in my trunk and they had to replace the module and a wire harness and the seal on the trunk. I question BMW placing sensitive electronic modules in the base of the trunk where water can get to them. Oh well all replaced under warrenty.
