It really depends on your dealer, SA and the guy taking your appointment.
I've taken my car (CPO) to 3 different dealers in the Dallas area:

- BMW of Dallas - crappy service, sometimes you get a BMW, most of the times it's an Enterprise rental car
. - Moritz BMW - better service, but I never got a BMW rental car
. - Classic BMW - better service, always got a BMW rental car

BMW of Dallas gave me: 335, X5 4.4 w/ Sport Package, 528, and 328 2 door before.
Of course I also got Pontiac G6 and Buick Enclave before

Camry is not a bad car, its much better then a PT crapper. The other week when I had battery problems with my 528i (Orange County BMW) gave us a 3 series wagon.
Flemington BMW (Where we bought the car) gave us a 06 BMW X5, not a bad car, have to go this weekend for some stuff they have a M5 for sale. Manager of the dealership and my family are good family friends so I am (hoping) we get to try out the beast.

Both times I have taken my car to Classic in Plano where I needed a loaner I have been give another 5 series. No sport package, no nav, no satellite and only 6 cylinders, but still they were BMWs. As others have said, I think a lot has to do with your SA and appointment desk. I have even been asked to delay bringing my car in so that a BMW loaner would be available.

The key is to get there in EARLY morning
which is also a determining factor on what kind of rental
you get (in some dealerships)
IMO, BMW of Dallas was a much better dealership under
it's previous owner, Mr. John Roberts. Since the sale to
AutoNation, it has gone down across the board ...

Not to seem unreasonable but, I would not accept any other car than a BMW loaner from a BMW dealership. The premium that a BMW owner pays when buying including service justifies nothing less. If my dealer did not provide me that simple service I would tell them on the spot that it is not acceptable and I would take my money elsewhere. This is not hard to understand for the dealer.

My Porsche dealer only hands out rentals (some others do have Porsche loaners). At the end of the day, it's only for a day or so, so no big deal. I'm OK as long as I get a car. I wish they'd give me a better car, but it's not worth getting too wound up about.
Someone is actually running a poll on this very topic as we speak on one of the Porsche forums I visit - right now, roughly 60% of the respondents are confirming that they get given a rental and not a Porsche.

Ya! So sad... when I got the car they told me I would get Cayenne's as loner but when I went in for service they said they were all out and all I get is a Chevy HHR, then by the second time my car went in for service they canned the whole loner program and "only" did rentals... so I got a PT cruiser! ARGH!
BMW same thing now... Mercedes, same... no more loners... just bottom of the barrel rentals... Bright side, I get a car and dont have to sit and wait.

How about 550i for a Corolla? That's what happened to me today... I went in for the second time regarding a TPM malfunction so they wanted to treat me well and give me a loaner. However, when they found out I wasn't 25 they told me they would have to get a car from Enterprise. Lucky me... a 550i M Sport for a Laser blue Corolla. WTF?
I'm only 22 so does that mean I'll seriously have to wait 3 years before I can get a BMW loaner? They have $70k collateral in their hands... come on
