Mine does this and its a steptronic after five minutes it goes away. Software 20.0 and up should fix this problem but I have not scheduled an appointment yet.

I have not been contacted by BMW and my car is at the dealership now for this issue (Nalley BMW, Atlanta GA) and they are saying this is normal!
The answer I got from the Service Advisor is that this bucking and rough idle is normal and will happen while the car is trying to warm up the catalytic converter. No offer to update the software, no suggestions at all. This seems absolutely ubsurd to me. You can actually see the car pitching back and forth from outside the car, and from inside the car, it feels like you're teaching a 9 year old how to drive a manual, and this is in an SMG!
I do hope to be contacted by somesone soon that seems to have a workable answer or constructive ideas to resolve this behavior in my 550 SMG. I don't know if that BMW representative was indicating they were going to contact me, or someone else in this thread. If you are from BMW NA and cannot reach me, please provide me with your number and I will contact you (send me a PM if you do not want to publish the number). Thanks in advance.

I fully agree with you that this is not acceptable. I even have it just driving along at constant speed with a cold engine and the car hesitates and jumps (in any gear).
This is part of why I couldn't stand my 545i anymore and I decided to get rid of it.
I just hope my new 530i doesn't have it. Any 6 cylinder folks here have this problem?

I picked up my car from the dealership today. They said my car already had the newest software on it (which I don't quite understand how, unless they're updating it over FM radio now or something) and I haven't noticed any improvement over when I dropped my car off several days ago. So, now, I wait for the regional rep to take a look at it. The car still lurches as much as ever. At least now, my service advisor observed it, even though it was a REALLY toned down instance. He drove it around the lot with me in the car with him and it started to shudder, but much less than the worst instances of the behavior. Since picking it up, I have had it shudder twice. I also still have not heard anything back from BMW NA, besides the post indicating they would contact me. Well, I'll let everyone know what happens, but I can't say I've found any satisfaction at all yet.

Ya it doesnt sound like its possible that you alrady have the newest CIP... Think they're lying.
I asked for new S/W update for my MINI I know I'm running 39 and newest is 44 but they told me I already have the newest and do not need a new s/w update. Bunch of Liars!
Oh the reason I ask if you got a oil chage recently was because they might have over filled your engine with oil. BUT i just realized you had the 550 with digital readout so you can tell in iDrive very easily or iDrive will tell you that you have too much oil.
Mine was overfilled and had engine shudder because of it and iDrive never told me about over filled oil.
