I have the exact same problem on a steptronic 550. Dealer installed CIP 20 but it didn't help much.
I never noticed the rough idle that CIP 20 was supposed to fix so I think we are seeing something else. I agree with you that it is a cold weather/engine issue. I have had my car since October and didn't notice the problem until it started getting cold in December.
My car has been at the dealer for the last week and will be all of this week so they can have an extended period of time to try to figure this out. I am on vacation for these two weeks so I just left the car with them while I am gone.
I will keep you posted on what my dealer finds out.

No issues with mine so far...but then again my car rarely sees overnight temps below 40-50 degrees and I'm sure you guys west of the Colorado River rarely see anything above that during this time of year.

So what happaned? Did BMW NA contact you?

The answer I got from the Service Advisor is that this bucking and rough idle is normal and will happen while the car is trying to warm up the catalytic converter. No offer to update the software, no suggestions at all. This seems absolutely ubsurd to me. You can actually see the car pitching back and forth from outside the car, and from inside the car, it feels like you're teaching a 9 year old how to drive a manual, and this is in an SMG!
I do hope to be contacted by somesone soon that seems to have a workable answer or constructive ideas to resolve this behavior in my 550 SMG. I don't know if that BMW representative was indicating they were going to contact me, or someone else in this thread. If you are from BMW NA and cannot reach me, please provide me with your number and I will contact you (send me a PM if you do not want to publish the number). Thanks in advance.

Its not normal. Mine is fine cold or warm. It doesnt buck at all. Whne it did vibrate at 1100 rpms it was because my engine was overfilled with oil and that was just causing vibrations not pitching back and forth.
Is there anther SMG that you can drive to prove to the dealer that yours is not correct?

is this rough idiling and strange behavior anything to do with the automatic choke system? this does give your car a rough idle when starting from cold.
