My Ride: 2004 545i - 6 speed manual (July 04 build), silver-grey/black, sports package std equipment (18", active roll, active steering, adaptive headlights), premium sound, bluetooth enabled, folding rear seat, lumbar, 3m hood/bumper protective film, rear tint, euro reflectors.

Some serious bashing going on here.

The specs of the M3 has it over the 545 - lighter and more HP. So if a 545 can beat an M3, it comes down to the driver, tires and any mods. Actually, I am surprised that the races where that close. It is nice to know that I won't get smoked too bad by some hot shot in an M3.

All that said, the M3 is a great fun car, but I will stick with my 545i.

What is BMW going to do to the M3 when the 550 comes out?

right the rumors are that the new M3 will have a V8 with 400hp + try to beat that with then new 550 i used to have a 2001 m3 before my 530 with a carbon fiber intake and a dinan chip..boy that thing moved.... now i'm enjoying my 530 but it is getting a bit to big for me..don't need the extra room anymore (i think) eventhough i have 2 babies (2 yr and 3 yr) i REALLY starting to like the new 3 series, specially some of the videos of it going thru a race circuit...very composed...

When BMW comes out with the new 4 doors M3 V8 engine, SMG III with 400 hp, I would love to trade in my 545i for that. Do you think the new M3's ride would be too harsh as a daily driver?

Any ///M car will drive harder. I have driven an M3 and an E39 M5. Sure they move like deamons but I prefer the ride of the stock cars for everyday.

The 550 will probably beat the E46 M3 from a roll - although not by much. The E46 will still be the better 'racer'. The E90 M3 won't be in the US for almost two years, so the 550 will be the 'king' for a year or so anyways.
