The M3 is faster, allthough it's HP is very similar to the 545.
But there is more than just HP...
The thing is, that an M3 and the 545 both have the speedlimiter. So talking about top speed... They both drive 250 Km/h = 156mph.
You can allways beat an M3 when the driver doesn't know how to drive his baby, or if he just doesn't want to race... If there is an experienced driver who knows how to use his M3 is racing you, he'll be in front of you... It's not a trick, it's an "emmy"

The M3 driver either wasn't racing you or just don't know how to drive (shift).

You may be able to stay (not beat, but stay behind) with the E46 M3 on a straight away, but the M3 will leave you in the dust on twisties. The 5 series is a freaking boat compare to the E46 3 series (let alone M3).

cheers,

Well, in my personaly opnion M3 is faster from 0-100 miles.
But, it will be interesting to know after 100 miles cause of V8.

May you tell us more detail about how you beat 2 M3s?

I owned an e46 m3 prior to my 545i and the 5er is in the same league. from launch the 545i and m3 are close due to the better torque of the 5. At higher revs the m3 will open up a gap. Over a twisty course the m3 would walk away, the suspension is far harder than the 5 and when pressing on it is more secure than the 5, in this respect the 5 is "a bit of a boat".

However, for the m3, the trade off of is rock hard ride all the time, if I had that and couldn't shake off a 5 luxo barge I'd be pretty peaved.

In all other respects the 5 is better, except perhaps one, I miss the racetrack engine note!

Exactly same as you I can from an M3 with SMG and although the five is fast the m3 feels safer at high speed. The only thing I miss is the rasp of the exhaust and wish the 545i has the same exhaust note as the 645i.

funny really i never thought i'd miss it that much. I've even gone to the length of investigating an aftermarket sports exhaust. I've been talking with Birds in Uxbridge and as soon as either an acs or hartge system is available i'll be working up a excuse to spend the money

Because the M3 revs a lot higher it just seemed to be going faster, until you look at the speedo . I had 155 out of the M3 (on unrestricted roads) and about 140 out of the 545i. One thing you do notice is how quite the 545i is at speed , the M3 was a convertible so the roof made it nosier.

The M5 will be bl**dy awesome if the 545i is anything to go by.
