I've just put my 545i on a 18ft trailer that I recently purchased. It's now time to secure the 545 to the trailer with some ratchet straps. Where on the 545 do I attach the hooks? How many should be sufficient?

Did you take a look at the section on towing in the owner's manual? Are all four wheels going to be off the ground? If so, you might want to purchase (or borrow) an extra tow hook that screws into the bumper.

#2: 2010 535xi Touring; Automatic.
You are not supposed to use the towhooks either to tow the car or to tie it down -- only to pull it onto a flatbed. You should not attach any hooks to the underside of the car. Instead, to tie it down, you are supposed to use webbing around each tire.
