Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
" 'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door;
Only this, and nothing more."

speedracerF4i:
No tapping - 18,700 miles & 17 months. My car doesn't tap when cold - middle of winter at 9,000 feet. Doesn't tap when hot - 100+ Calif desert. Starting in garage - almost silent and smooth. Good Luck!

You might want to compare your car to another at the lot.

I agree, I had a situation where I was unsure of a noise my car was making and I got my salesman to start another 545 on the lot the listen to. If need be, park then side by side and listen to the two engines.

I think he did this already and the other 545 tapped too.

No tapping noises. A myriad of other issues....but no tapping. The engine runs quiet at all speeds and temps.

Sorry, don't see him mention anywhere that he has done this, either in this thread or the link to his previous thread, though I didn't read all three pages of his earlier thread!

Kscarroll,

Thanks your for comment. My tapping occurs only under load. So you have to be driving to notice. It is especially loud going up a hill. The service advisers (from 2 dealers) all admitted that the noise is louder in my car than any other they have heard. But it all comes down to the FSE. What he decides goes.

The dealer told me that they drove another 545i in their lot and could hear the same tapping noises, though not as loud. They denied repair because of this.

It is hard to say what noise is normal and what is perceived as loud. This can be very subjective.

The side by side comparison is the only way to go. Not to have them check it, but for you to be there and listen. You should be able to put this to rest once and for all.

Get the field service rep and your SA at your dealer with one or two other 4.4 engines. Listen with them and make a determination.

As pointed out the Valvetronic engines may have more noise. I hear some from my engine, but only when outside the car. Inderstanding engine dynamics, the valves are going to make some noise. After all, there are 32 of them in that engine, I believe.

I do not find it to be excessive, but a side by side test will determine it.

Suggestion:

Take a desible guage in both your car and another car from a dealer lot an video record the levels in both cars. This would be one way of not providing a subjective result.

I'll chime in to add that my 545 is as silent as can be and has been from day one to now, which is after about 15 months and 15,000 miles.

Your FSE needs to step up and help you remedy an obvious problem with your engine...
