guys,

newbie here, but question...... guys with steptronic 545 or 550's do you drive it most of the time in DS? i know on the hwy its pointless however just local driving?

my main concern really is..... is there a harm to he auto driving in DS constantly?

i only ask as i just spent some dollars servicing/sleeve e.t.c so dont really want to fork that out again

any input would be great thanks

No harm, its programmed to do act that way. When you put it in DS it just tell the car to be more aggressive in the way it responds to the pedal.

+1

However it just uses more gas when in DS mode. I love it though, it holds the gear all the way up to 5k+, very aggressive and sometimes I prefer it over manual mode

Well, obviously there will be more wear on the components. Engine will rev more, tranny will spin faster and change more frequently.

I only put DS on rare occasion and then with DTS. I rather think of it as enjoying a special occassion. I've run without any traction control at times. But its flat out dangerous if your not a tracking the car to keep your skills sharp.

I think I would say the tranny would change LESS frequently in DS mode. Stays in same gear for higher RPMs. And the engine is just as happy at 4,000 RPMS as it is at 2,000 RPMs.
I would not consider DS mode attributing to more wear.

More revs more wear. 2x the example you cite. More heat too

But maybe the gear don't change as much. Ds mode tomorrow for me

I almost always drive in D/S mode. I notice a significant drop in fuel economy though.

Good point. but I think that still assumes those things you mention cause more harm than good.
- more heat might be better on short 15 minute commute to work to help get everything up to temp. Cold, short trips are killers of engines.
- What if 4,000 rpm also puts less stress on the tranny/engine? Maybe oil flows better? Maybe lots of things

I wouldn't go so far to say that my engine is wearing twice as fast at 4,000 rpm than it is at 2,000 rpm

all good conversation - great talk for a round of beers!
