I agree a better test is to put the 545i up against the 535i...preferably one with a fair number of miles so some of the moving parts have "loosened up" a bit. As several have pointed out on this forum, the 535i gets faster and faster as the engine and other performance parts are "seasoned". This applies to not only the 535 but any car. I'm not going to say which one is faster...depends on a lot of different factors and obviously I'm a little biased but I think this would provide the best baseline for any fair comparison.

The 535XI loaner had 5700 miles on it.Should be well broken in.Being a loaner I am sure it was driven harder than usual from people like me who wanted to see how it performs.My initial thoughts on the 535XI before I drove it were that it would be much faster on the launch because of all wheel drive and then slower than a 535I after 30 mph.I think they would have almost identical 1/4 ET's with the 535I having about a 2 mph better trap speed.I was just disappointed in the launch.It did't seem to have enough low end grunt to make use of the all wheel drive.Maybe a little turbo lag.My 545I has so much low end torque that I have a hard time getting a good launch due to wheel spin,but when I do get a good launch I can regularly go under 5 secs for 0-60.This is with a GT2 timer that I have compared to a NHRA drag strip timer.It was never off more than .09 secs at any point compared to the drag strip time.

Have you ever seen the times that Grogan and Znod achieved with their 545's? Believe me, Grogan in his 545 is quicker than most of us were in 550's, never mind the 535!

If the 550 is only 2-tenths of a second faster than the 535 as reported by BMW, then it stands to reason that the 545 with 35 less hp would be somewhere less than 2-tenths faster. I'm not disputing that the 545 may be quicker but if both vehicles are completely stock, seems to me the difference would be minimal. Break--break...I just reread the post. Under 5 secs 0-60 stock? Wow...perhaps Grogan's 545 is a ringer!

Just curious...did the 535xi have steptronic or SAT?

Ummm not really... some are stronger than others from the factory, there are variations. and yes grogan545 seems to be able to get REALLY good 1/4 speeds with his car... him and Znod. Plus I think grogan545 knows how to launch a E60 quicker than many many others.

That's probably true, Alex. The difference is that the drivers generally don't practice acceleration runs with the same tenacity as a couple of members of this board! I doubt if I ever got close to the best 545 times posted here when I had my 550, even though my 550 was noticeably quicker than my prior 545. It's all relative.
