My Ride: In a place where the Mercedes density is the highest in the world (no. of MB per square kilometer) I choose a Bimmer, why? because of one thing "The Ultimate Driving Experience"

I too live in a snow belt and did not have any problems last year. I have 17" non-runflats in the summer and in the winter went with 17" Toyo tires which work very well. There is no question that AWD is better, but the reduction of power 12 months a year with a six, was not worth the the 10 or 15 days a year wherein we really get dumped on with large snow accumulations . Just my opinion.

My Ride: 2006 BMW M5, Silverstone with black extended leather, brushed aluminium trim, Nav Pro, Logic 7, PDC, 35 % tint.
I live in Canada, and trust me, we get lots of snow. The 545 handles great if you have winter tires. I have the Dunlop M3's, and they do work really well. Last year during a big snow storm, I was passing 4 x 4 sport utilites up a highway ramp, some of them actually got stuck!
I personally feel you are better off with RWD and winter tires than with AWD and all-seasons. Obviously, AWD and winter tires are the best solution.

If you like your current rims for summer and are thinking about winter rims, I would go for a little smaller tire (narrower), especially in the back. Like a set of 17". The big fat meats are not the best in snow.
If you don't want to change summer and winter and want to comprimise, you can consider the Mich sport A/S.
Personally, I agree with a dedicated set of winter tires if you get a lot of snow.
Yes, I live in CA, but I spent 23 years in WI.

Not saying any less about the 530xi but if you really want the power and performance of the 545i, I wouldn't compromise it just for a few months of winter.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.

"Snows quite a bit in Jersey?" Oh, please.....Try UPstate New York. You don't need 4-wheel drive, or at least, can't possibley cost-justify it there. Get the 545 or 550 and get some winter tires and wheels. Benn doing it for decades.
