But how does the 335 do with 4 people and 4 sets of golf clubs in it
Best post so far.

not that I want to open a can of worms here, but I have had two 'meetings' with 335i's (one convert, one coupe). All I can say is low revs, they pull away, until I hit high revs, when I pull them in . Very impressed with my 545i especially after all the hype around the 335i's. Of course I'm talking stock here and I'm sure the 335i is more tunable than 'the old 545i'.

On another note has anyone seen the youtube vids of a standard e46 M3 vs and standard 335i coupe - makes me feel comfortable if I met an M3 on my travels... yes I know I know, these meetings and videos are not proper tests and it's all down to drivers etc etc but hey
I've had different experiences. With a stock 545i, I'm somewhat close to both a 335i and M3 at speeds below 100mph. After that though, they pull ahead.

There should be plenty of threads on this subject in future.

Typically, the top of the line 5 series and 3 series is slower than the outgoing M5 and M3, but the turbo changes everything. As far as straight-line speed, I'd expect them to be quite comparable.

The M5 has a big advantage in the locking rear differential for 0-60 runs.

In November my wife took delivery of a new 335i 4dr sport package with auto. I loved the car so much I dumped my E350 and bought a 535i sport pkg with SAT. Now that I have a few miles on the 535 I was able to run the two cars side by side. Out of the hole (first gear) if anything the 535i was a little quicker but when we hit 2nd gear the 335 pulled about a car length. From there it was close, probably the 335 had a 20ft gain at 80mph. Based on this nonscientific comparison I would say the 335 is about .15 sec quicker to 60mph. At 80mph the 535 was holding very close so i would guess there would be appox .20 difference at the end of the quarter. Maybe this info will help with the 335i vs 535i vs 550i discussion.
I've answered a few questions since this original post. I recently got a "Gforce SS" that measures 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. After fooling with my 535i more I decided that it was probably pulling timing right after the 1-2 shift. I took the car to a straight but uphill stretch of road and did 3 x 0-60 runs. results were 5.62 - 5.73sec and best 1/4 was about 14.2 sec. I then went up to my local gas station (who sells race gas) and added 3 gal of 100 oct unleaded on top of about 13 gal of pump gas already in tank. Went immediately back to the same stretch of road and ran a 0-60 of 5.36 and a 1/4 of 13.93. I think I probably had a bad tank of gas that was at less than 91 octane because the 1-2 shift hesitation was gone. I then ran my 335 on the same stretch and recorded 0-60 of 5.30 and 1/4 of 13.91.

You can look at these results two ways. First is that the extra couple points of octane is just good for more HP in a turbo car or my car had bad gas and needed the extra octane to perform properly. Once I use up the current tank of gas I will refill with pump 91 oct and retest. Of course the other interesting thing is how close the 535i is to the 335i in acceleration.
