In November my wife took delivery of a new 335i 4dr sport package with auto. I loved the car so much I dumped my E350 and bought a 535i sport pkg with SAT. Now that I have a few miles on the 535 I was able to run the two cars side by side. Out of the hole (first gear) if anything the 535i was a little quicker but when we hit 2nd gear the 335 pulled about a car length. From there it was close, probably the 335 had a 20ft gain at 80mph. Based on this nonscientific comparison I would say the 335 is about .15 sec quicker to 60mph. At 80mph the 535 was holding very close so i would guess there would be appox .20 difference at the end of the quarter. Maybe this info will help with the 335i vs 535i vs 550i discussion.

Its rather simple.

Both cars have same gearing, final drive ratio.

335i is lighter, .2 faster.

I wonder if there will be 235i and 435i and 635i which they will probably call the 640i don ask why lol.....but my guess is with the rising gas prices they will start to inject the 3.0 TT Engine in all their cars...so probably even the return of 740Li with actually a 3.0 engine?

not that I want to open a can of worms here, but I have had two 'meetings' with 335i's (one convert, one coupe). All I can say is low revs, they pull away, until I hit high revs, when I pull them in . Very impressed with my 545i especially after all the hype around the 335i's. Of course I'm talking stock here and I'm sure the 335i is more tunable than 'the old 545i'.

On another note has anyone seen the youtube vids of a standard e46 M3 vs and standard 335i coupe - makes me feel comfortable if I met an M3 on my travels... yes I know I know, these meetings and videos are not proper tests and it's all down to drivers etc etc but hey

It's too late. The thread already opened it.

I chose the 535i based on close enough performance to the 335i yet bigger. Most 3'ers sold are Xi's plus the auto tranny and no sport package which negates any benefit had over the 535i. Would've liked to get the 550i but the extra cost, increased mpg, and the potential for 19" wheel damage on potholed filled roads in these parts swayed me against it.
