I have to fill like this for my 400 mile, non-stop, each way commute to work (which, luckily I only do once a week !).
Hmmm... surely you can EASILY get 400 miles on a tankful without this palaver (and 800 miles is impossible on a tankful in a 535d - at least it is on mine).

Not easily. Last night I left work with a brimmed tank and got home with 29 miles to spare. Home is 12 miles from the nearest petrol station, so it's fairly tight. I don't drive for efficiency though, just to try and get home the same day I leave work

Not on a 535d it's not, there is non !

There can be an issue with slow response driving off in D sometimes ( I think cos it tries to start in 2nd gear for smoothness)

I for one will slip it across to DS if I'm on a roundabout and need a quick getaway PS not on a cold engine though !
It does have a turbo lag I am afraid, my boss has one and I test drove two and they all had a turbo lag
I am sorry, but I am not trying to rattle your cage here. I had a 530d E60 and the turbo lag urged me to sell in within 1 month of ownership. I then test drove 535d and the turbolag is admitedly much much less - but IT IS there.
My SA at Cooper BMW told me that the smaller turbo cured the turbo lag issue to a great extent but did not eliminate it and that is understandable as ANY turbo in the world will need a fraction of a second to respond to the signal from the throtle?

Juliann sorry but why would you brimm the tank? Would that help in the problem of less than 6 cyls firing?

Sorry, I think we have a differing understanding of 'brimming'. I mean, fill the tank until it's not possible to get another drop of fuel in it. The only help is that it means I can drive my journey without re-fuelling.

For your problem, it may be worth trying fuel from another supplier and see if that eliminates the issue.

Isn't that only if it's not already spooled up?

And with a 535d isn't the first sequential turbo permanently spooled up?

29-30 imperial mpg in a 535d on a 400 mile journey?

Is the journey very stop/start? It seem like something's awry with that consumption. Even if you're doing over 100mph all the way.

parts of it are - M25 / M4 as far as Reading is a nightmare, then it has the potential to get pretty quick especially heading down the M5 and beyond. I'm told that consumption is fairly poor beyond 120 - not that I would condone speeding if it were a risk to others.

But it's OK if it's a risk to yourself, I guess...
