I've just noticed that in this cold weather when the car is cold it sounds a little lumpy (and yes I know it is a diesel!) when idling.

It sorts itself out quick enough and sounds fine.

Anybody else notice this?

Yup. I also notice that when the engine is still cold it shudders and vibrates a bit at idle. This is most present when i reach red lights and can feel the whole car wobbling slightly uncontrolable. It's the same feeling as a human has heart palpitations. After it gets warmed up this thing dissapears. I dunno i'm starting to think it's the diesel i'm putting it, and although i've put only the best diesels available here (euro 5 - OMV or Mol) i still don't think they are good enough. It's like "the diesel has inpurities in it". Did you guys experience the same thing?

Nope, mine seems to be running and sounding fine at the moment. In fact, it was running like a dream last night on my way home from work.

I'm loving this car more and more with each drive!

Yes. Diesel engines are generally set up so that with a cold engine the injection pump delivers fuel with a higher advance timing, so the engine is noisier (but it warms up quicker, and it runs smoother (!) when cold). As soon as the engine temperature rises a little the electronics (or a mechanical thermostat) adjust the timing, and the noise decreases. If outside it's cold, it takes a few seconds longer for the temp to rise, so you notice it more.

Thanks for the reply

It is partly the noise and then a few seconds of slighlty erratic idling - I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it at this stage as other times it is absolutely fine.

I know my question is out of topic. but how does it feel driving 535d compare to 530i? 535d seems to have more punch then 530i. I had never driven a high power diesel and its not available in the US market. The last time I drove a diesel was a mercedes G class in about 15 years ago in Europe, it was impressive. The power of the G is very low and nothing compare to your 535d. I am just very curious about it and that's it.
I've not driven a 530 but have driven a few 330s.
It's is mainly in the delivery as of course a diesel has a smaller power band as it does not rev so high but it carries you on a wave of torque. It is arguably a more relaxed drive.
Diesel engines are quieter now although in my opinion the Audi V6 diesels are slightly nicer sounding.
Speed - a factory 535d does the 0-60 sprint in about 6.5secs and 0-100 in 16 secs. A DMS tuned one like mine will do it (according to 2 independent road tests) in approx 5.5 and 13.5 respectively. Power up from 272 to 334 and torque up to 513lb/ft

oh cool, 334 hp!!

shorter power band, high HP and torque sound like american muscle car! bmwusa should import it.

No ULS diesel till last summer for one thing. I expect it's still in low supply.

IIRC 2008 is the year that BMW diesels will be imported into US.
