My Ride: '08 535XI
Smile

Hello Everyone.

I have an '08 535xi with a build date of April '07. I had my gear shifter replaced and the Fuel Pump replaced last week.

The fuel pump failure, the dealer diagnoses relatively quickly (symptom was crank time of 2-4 seconds).

The gear shifter (would not go into R), at my first attempt, SA thought I was a looney and had this look of 'do you know how to drive?'. My second time bringing the car in, another random SA I was talking to told me that many 5 series are having problems with the gear shifter and a TSB is going out soon. When I relayed this info to my SA and told him that other 5 series owners were having similar problems (bimmerfest), SA told me I should not be reading these forums and there is no problem with the gear shifter and will not have to be replaced. Well, he called back in an hour to tell me that the gear shifter was going to be replaced.

going back to the fuel pump failure (which I find more troubling), any other 535 drivers with a fuel pump failure?

my car was at the dealer for 7 seven days, what is a reasonable compensation that I should ask from BMWUSA?

Keep us updated. I have a 8/07 535i and have had it for a month. One time it wouldn't go into drive and now the lights in the handle work about half the time.

I don't you will get any compensation from BMWUSA for the your car being in the shop. Didn't you get a loaner? The dealer will usually pay for a rental car if a loaner wasn't available.

This is the first time I've heard of problems with the gear shifter. It's new for the 2008 model.

I've only heard about a few 535s with fuel pump failures, but it's a common problem on the 335. Someone gave an estimate of 75% of 335 FPs needing replacement.

First, I would switch from your original SA who told you not to read these forums and move to that other random SA who told you the truth. Second, sorry you've had such issues in a new car. Third, tell us some more info about your location and car, from your post I assume you have the Steptronic tranny. If there is a TSB coming on the gear shifter, you'll see it here pretty quickly. Can't recall anyone else with an issue like yours, but if they are here, they'll chime in... And Welcome!

Thanks all for replying. Yes, my car is a streptronic automatic. Its got less than 3000 miles on it. A few 5 series peeps from bimmerfest had their gear shifters replaced..

I did get a loaner from the dealer, but I'm paying to drive a 5 series, not some smelly loaner

I am not sure if I am experiencing similar issues in regards to the shifter. This only happens to me at cold starts where I would need to re-engage drive or reverse a second time. I do not have to force or wiggle to get D or R engaged.

Can this issue be specific to the 535i or all across the 5 series lineup.....

I think this problem is specific to the gear shifter, not to the engine. Some day, the electronic gear shifter will be completely replaced by buttons or voice activation!

Yes, I only experienced it during a cold start.

Are all these non-SAT's or a combo of both?

sorry to hea of your troubles, check out the E90 forums for hundreds of 3.0TT engines that have fuel pump failures. The bad thing is that many taken more than a month to get fixed therefore many have lemon'd theirs. You can tell by seeing the number 335's on the used market with VERY low miles.
