If it's not going to put any sort of dent in your finances then 550i. I also like your options.
Right.....550 beats 530.....BUT...if you have a 545....well, then you should immediately move up to an emmy......right Joe??

There is no replacement for displacement! You will not tire of the 360ft/lb of torque. The 550 is great off the line, and phenomenal from 60-120 mph. I purchased an e39 530 in 01 and loved the car, but soon regretted not getting the 540.

Let's clear up this MPG thing right now. The 550 in true stop and go driving (0-30 and back again - with an occasional 0-40) will get about 13 MPG. Consistent highway 70MPH is closer to 26MPG. So figure 18 if you have a 50/50 mix of highway and city. Me? I'm 99% city with a highway trip every other week. So I'm always in the low 13s if I am lucky.

19mpg... thats some aggressive driving.

I average 24mpg
Mike, are you sure about this? Maybe you have your car configured for Imperial Gallons? I made a similar mistake a couple of years ago -- I thought I was averaging 26mpg but it was really 22mpg after I found the setting in IDrive.

I have a 530i which I love, but find myself constantly thinking I'd like a 550, but then I hate getting beaten at the lights... I think if you go the lower spec, you'll always be wondering, so save yourself the pain and if money really isn't an issue, go the 550.

yeah, I'm almost exactly like you Doug......mostly traffic driving, with some open road....usually average around 13-15. I do think the car is very efficient when you get on the highway though. My problem is that driving around town....well.....I like to push it...I mean, I bought the car to enjoy it!! My 04 530 didn't really do much better......maybe 15-17 around town, and closer to 30 on the highway. That made mpg a non-issue for me when I wanted to move up the the 550.

I did a 500 mile highway trip last week and my mpg was very close to 30. In town it is about half that. This car is very aerodynamic and gets great highway mileage for its size.

Screw that. Sell a kidney and buy an fully loaded M5!
What are you talking about? A kidney is only worth 5K in China. Any you can't get ditty in the US.

I'm not a M5 lover. Don't like low tq/high hp engines; don't like the SMG (including the watered down launch control for US cars); don't like horrible gas mileage; and don't like usually being beaten in straight-lines by those in "my class." I'll keep my 545i for now.
