If it's not going to put any sort of dent in your finances then 550i. I also like your options.

There is no replacement for displacement! You will not tire of the 360ft/lb of torque. The 550 is great off the line, and phenomenal from 60-120 mph. I purchased an e39 530 in 01 and loved the car, but soon regretted not getting the 540.

Let's clear up this MPG thing right now. The 550 in true stop and go driving (0-30 and back again - with an occasional 0-40) will get about 13 MPG. Consistent highway 70MPH is closer to 26MPG. So figure 18 if you have a 50/50 mix of highway and city. Me? I'm 99% city with a highway trip every other week. So I'm always in the low 13s if I am lucky.

GONE - 2005 530i Titanium Grey
I have a 530i which I love, but find myself constantly thinking I'd like a 550, but then I hate getting beaten at the lights... I think if you go the lower spec, you'll always be wondering, so save yourself the pain and if money really isn't an issue, go the 550.

I did a 500 mile highway trip last week and my mpg was very close to 30. In town it is about half that. This car is very aerodynamic and gets great highway mileage for its size.
