My Ride: 2006 BMW M5, Silverstone with black extended leather, brushed aluminium trim, Nav Pro, Logic 7, PDC, 35 % tint.
I would give you the advice that someone told me when I was going to buy my house and I didn't listen:
"Buy the best that you can afford."
And now I am looking to buy another house and prices here in Toronto keep going up.
Bottom line, if you can afford the 550 get it, but if it is a financial burden in any way get the cheaper car.
We buy these vehicles as luxury items, but we also value them as necessary transportation.
I think that if you got the 530i you would have a very great car, but once in a while you would wonder what it would be like to have that extra power and luxury and the 550 badge on the grill.
(Or you could make the ultimate commitment and get an M5).
I am in a similar profession to you. You are going to be leasing and it will be a tax write-off.
So, to summarize, I say, "Buy the best you can afford."

Gas isn't an issue if the 550 isn't your daily driver.

I am the same way..I think the difference in price is worth it. I am going tomorrow to make the final deal. I think I can get the 550i for a little more. I have some negative equity from my POS Grand Cherokee (2005, had it 20 months), but it shouldn't effect it too much. Any tips for negotiating here...I already have the invoice price from Edmunds.com printed. I love these cars. Really, really awesome rides....

Gas is part of the price the way I look at it, although he didn't factor it into his price difference.

Screw that. Sell a kidney and buy an fully loaded M5!
EDIT: Okay, you said fully-loaded. I priced one out to about $82K and not MSRP.
