Just received a quote of ?145 (incl. VAT) from Breyton for a E60 520d stainless steel tailpipe.
This is a picture taken from their web-site. From what I can gather from the associated text, this is actually a picture of a 530d(?!), but I assume it will look similar to the 520d tailpipe they offer. From the photo its hard to see if there will be a major improvement, but I'm sure there will be.
Anyway, I've ordered one, will fit it, take photos, and report back... (- fingers crossed that it fits properly!!)
Cheers

I just found out that the tailpipe needs to welded to the original tail pipe. (Maybe this is normal, however I though it was a simple screw fitting, which I have seen on other chrome tailpipe offerings.)
I have never welded anything on a car before, so have no idea what this involves or whether I can take this off again at the end of the company car lease. Do I just go to any old garage and get this done? Should I go to the BMW dealer? Is it going to be straight forward to get this removed before I return the car?
Can anyone help me here before I end up ordering something I personally can't use??

The standard exhaust is not stainless is it? Because I didn't think it was at all easy if even possible to weld stainless to a different metal.
And I suspect you'll find the standard exhaust has some finish which makes it difficult to weld even ordinary steel to it.

If it's welded on you cannot just take it off. If could be cut off but that will make a mess of it & the exhaust.

thanks for the explanation and advice. I guess it's a clear no-go for me, because I need to give the car back in one piece and as delivered. Shame - so the search continues...
cheers

No luck yet - the local dealer which was listed on the website has gone out of business.
