when my car was for service at the dealer i got a 320d, i was very sceptic about it but i must say it drove very good! more then enough power and torque for normal/ sporty use. Didn't get a good idea about fuel consumption, but i think it's ok.

Don't worry...the 520d will have enough thrust. chipp it at get it to maybe 200hp and kick the 6cyl 525d a run for it's money. I test drove an 120d and it was amaizing...well the car is lighter and smaller but the engine alone had the bmw blood for sure.

The 520d will probably feel quicker than a 525i. The old E39 525d only had 160 odd bhp and that used to fly.

Compare the 520d against the Audi A6 2.0d: -

Audi 140bhp, 320nm, 0-62 in 10.3, top speed 130mph and 44.8mpg.

BMW 163bhp, 340nm, 0-62 in 8.6, top speed 139mph and 47.9mpg.

520d sounds ok to me. I recently borrowed a 120d and that was well quick. The 520d will just be a bit less but still a fine motorcar and great contender for todays standards.

163 HP in an E60? Sad. I know diesels have torque, but come on. A civic si has more horesepower.

You guys in the US, drive around with V8 engines, pay the half in gas prices, and dosen't care about the environment as much as we do in Europe

Bush didn't sign the environment agreement! My point is that if you guys in the US would have to pay the prices we do en EU, and pay extra taxes for driving a car with huge CO2 exhuast you wil probably change your mind, acording to the 520d engine...

I've driven the A6 2.0 TDI, and the car was not fast, but hey it actually have a nice torque and I had a nice ride in it, at highway speeds with low consumption.. So the 520d which has some more HP than the A6 should probably be even better

My 2 cent about the power comsumption in the US and the 520d

I agree! Wait untill the next oil cryses in us and then maybe some of the petrolheads will consider it....
In a way the scale has a way of leveling things up for eg:
>us doesn't care about evironment---> alot of natural disasters (tornados, hurricanes and floods) and i'm afraid this is only the beginning
>the price of cheap petrol is high---->bombs and terrorist attacks all over us , not to mention thousands of soldiers lost in war.
and the list may continue...

Bush has got to go imo, (personally i hate that man)...and US should back off from world domination (at least for a while) and mind the enviroment more...

Great .... Rodney pokes fun at 162 HP and rest of us (americans) got to get the "I hate Bush", gas-hogging, anti-environment, Eurocentric, "its all your fault" lecture. Let's just stick to talking BMWs. OK

Ok i addmit that i went a bit off topic with the bush thing. It was a personal opinion and shouldn't be on this topic.

"gas-hogging?" we are talking about bmw's and now we are talking about a special one called 520d. A diesel is in our days is a compromise between good performance and good fuel consumption. Because the gas is very cheap in USA of course lots of americans afford to buy a gas-guggler power car. So yes for some of the americans 162 hp is ridiculous or seems underpowered but u have to take note that it's a difference in mentality, life-style, taxes, emissions...alot of stuff between usa and europe.

less protective environment, well it is a fact. Sorry. And in Europe the more the car poluates the higher the taxes. Again a difference in taxes.

It's all your fault? when did i say that? for what?

Anyway i was just a bit amaized on that post. I wonder how our american bmw lovers would react if they would find out that some of us here in europe still drive 50 hp cars.

Here Here I drive the 520i 170 bhp and somehow I am made to feel inferior to the USA guys even had comments along those line's, the price of petrol (about twice the USA rate) is what controls what I drive, common sense I suppose, and anyhow 2/3 sec's difference to get to 60mph wow I really miss that and isn't the speed limit 60 and 70 and arn't we a reponsible forum as for the enviroment well Katrina and Rita to name a few are the result of the destruction to the enviroment by gas guzzlers, so get the 520d and don't let these guys with 300+ bhp put you off.

One reply from one U.S citizen about horsepower and now every American is a gas hogging/anti-enviroment person?

I personally regret the size of the engine in my car, I agree with tomwid's comments.

Yeeehaaw!
If only the US federal and state governments would pass legislation that forced car manufacturers to offer low emission, alternative fuel, and low consumption vehicles thus using the power of the largest auto market in the world to drive a new generation of engines and alternative fuels that would benefit the entire planet.

We pay half the gas price or less because we don't slap on extreme taxes (e.g. 75% of petrol price in UK is tax).

525s, and 530s outsell 545s by a factor of ten in the US. We don't all have those V8s (though I wouldn't kick an M5 out of bed to get to my 525).
