Hi guys,

I was sat at service department at BMW waiting for my car and spotted a spanking new x5 40d drive past. I look at the specs for this and notice that it is a more powerful version of the current 35d lump - it is still the same displacement.

so... i was wondering, what is the actual physical different between these engines? is it just an ECU change or actual uprated parts also?

I am looking at a DMS, but if there is little difference (such as an uprated turbo) and can be retrofitted, I may look at this before DMS.

What are your thoughts?

The BMW X5 E70 LCI (facelift) will include the xDrive40d model powered by the same 3.0-liter engine found in the 740d. Its different.

AFAIK the 25d, 30d and 35d (and apparently now the 40d) are all the same lump (3 litre). AFAIK2 the difference is all in the tuning of the turbo(s). No doubt there are some different parts to handle increased pressure.

So you are saying that the only difference is really the turbo tuning? does that mean that the 25d, 30, and 35d can all be remapped to perform like the 40d? AND does that mean that the 40d cannot be tuned to perform more than these other engines?

Surely there must be an uprated turbo or two to get more out of the engine without eating into the fault tolerance of the engine?

I'd like to know if i can upgrade my 35d to a 40d BEFORE remapping...

Seems like you are on the bleeding edge of Diesel knowledge Darron, all of us with 535d's would like to know if this is an option.

The 2.5d and the 3.0d are single turbo 3 litre units. The 3.5d and 4.0d are twin-turbo 3 litre units.

So the options would seem to be uprate a 2.5 to a 3.0, or a 3.5 to a 4.0

However, with the complexity of these engines and the software variations i'm not optimistic.

Good luck,
Mike
