2008 550 Sport
I have it and I love it. I have driven the exact same car back to back with/without and there is no comparison.

Can you guys please comment, bullet points are OK... why is AS so superior to the regular power assisted steering... from a simple driving perspective. I have never driven an AS equipped car (for the reasons as the original OP) and to be honest the regular steering is very good, a little more elbow grease needed in very tight situations.. but at speed its very stable.... I am considering adding it to my ED (Nov 19) but would like to get some more feedback...

I detected no difference in the steering feedback/road feel of an AS car vs. non-AS. I also did not have to "get used to" the AS. I do have to get used to driving non-as cars whenever I drive a different car (test driving an M3 convertible was a scary experience based on the first turn).
Anyway, I think the option is well worth it. However, you can get used to anything.
Active Steering is so nice to have.. You can feel the difference right away when you drive cars with no AS. With AS, when you make U turn, you can feel the difference.
you should try it especially when you park your car, you always turn the steering wheels vice versa.

I had AS on my 2005 545, and I loved it. It got even better as the software was upgraded. When I got the 2007 550, I didn't get it - I immediately missed it, and really regretted it from that point on. It would definitely be on my next E60 if I were to get another one. Despite what some members have posted on here, AS is utterly predictable in operation. Having made one mistake, AS for me is a must. The steering on an E60 with AS feels much closer to that of my 997 S than the steering on my 550 ever did.

My Ride: Arrived on 12/31/09 2009 Black Sapphire Metallic 535i with Steptronic, Auburn interior, Sport and Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium, PDC, Nav, Comfort Access. Additions include Valentine 1 Hardwire and Dinan Stage II! Graduating from a 2006 - 530i
I am sold on active steering. It makes my '06 530i handle like by e46 330i. I drove a non-active steer 550i and thought the steering was too light and lacked precision.
