I've been looking for a 2008 550 sport with active steering all over Southern Cal dealerships...almost impossible to find. I'm really surprised that it is no longer included in the sports package. My 2004 530 sport has it and I would not even consider a 550 without it! I test drove the carbon black 550 sport loaded, but no active steering...I had to walk away from the deal.

I agree that AS is a great option. If you ask me, I think they made it even greater in the 2008 car -- it seems less detectable and more refined...

Why not just order a car with what you want?

AS on the 550 Sport is awesome. It was even further refined in the 08 LCI than the previous iteration. I have/had both. I am really glad that I got it.

Can you guys please comment, bullet points are OK... why is AS so superior to the regular power assisted steering... from a simple driving perspective. I have never driven an AS equipped car (for the reasons as the original OP) and to be honest the regular steering is very good, a little more elbow grease needed in very tight situations.. but at speed its very stable.... I am considering adding it to my ED (Nov 19) but would like to get some more feedback...

Cheers,

Roland Kelly

The way that AS makes driving feel absolutely intuitive is what I like, I often trade off between my X5 without AS and my 550 with it ,and while I absolutely love driving the X5 it does lack that " connection" with the road that I have become so used to in the car. It certainly took some getting used to, I constantly had to adjust my city turns so I didnt hit the side walks or power poles because of it's "instant translation" of the the turn but now I would never have a car without it,

Cheers

It works quite well at low speeds and it works rather awsome at high speeds. At high speeds regular steering feels slightly looser in comparison. On the new 550 Sport with the SAT, the steering responds to sport mode. The best way to determine if it is right for you is drive a car with it.
