Hey all I have a 2008 528i that when driving will go into neutral quite frequently with no warning. No error messages or anything. I was able to get a code E09A. Anyone have any ideas? I have done a fluid and filter change.

Got a different shifter and it did not change how the car was acting. It is still popping into neutral after driving for about a minute. I can then pull it back towards drive and it will continue for maybe 10-30 seconds then pop out again. Then it may be ok for a little but and do it again. Any idea what could cause this.

 

Try resetting your transmission. Turn the car on to radio ready, but do not start your engine. Press and hold down the gas pedal to the floor for about 30 seconds. Turn car off, open and close driver door and your transmission should be reset. I have a 2008 528i as well and had issues with shifting out of drive or not shifting into gear at all..after a while. It turned out that I was almost bone dry on transmission oil. Someone before me took the car to a whack mechanic who siliconed the drain plug on the transmission pan. This over time, caused a slow leak and when I bought the car I was nearing that transmission almost being completely without fluid! So I've replaced the pan so no more drain plug leak, added the fluid back in and the car has been running fine with no shifting issues ever since.
