I can't help you with names, I was just suggesting aftermarket since oem is for a lighter metal.

Hi. I am in your same situation. Can you tell me where did you get the struts to hold the heavy steel hood?

Google lift support depot. They will get you the correct one. I email customer service to get the correct ones. Just explain your situation. I just open my hood the other day and it holds up good.

I just ordered, due to the same issue. On LiftSupportDepot.com you will use part number# 4956M10. It increases the strength by 30#. Great Customer Service and definitely cheaper than amazon.

I had the same problem with the hood struts. I just google and checked a few places out. They pop out and pop right in. Of course the dealership says the 550i has that problem... and wanted $300 for the parts NOT!!!!! $47 shipped..

Default Hood struts ect...

I had the same problem with my 07 550i hood and my hood is the one that came with the car and I heard it was a common problem with the v8's 545i and the 550i especially. I got new hood struts from ECS Tuning for about $48 shipped. Every time I mention a issue I'm having the stealership says oh that common in a BMW v8's namely the 545i and 550i... from the ivm module, steering rack, radiator fan, left front lower control arm bushing, drivers side halo light malfunction ( just give it a good slap and it will come back on) and the lil white tank under the hood by the wheel well. Yup I've had all these issues with my 550i that they said are common with these particular E60's

The car's hood was replaced with an aftermarket hood due to an accident and we are thinking maybe its the wrong hood. Your thoughts please.

Just use the gaslift shocks from an E46 they are specified to lift the steel hood at 580 Newtons (standard) as compared to the stock gaslift shocks from an E60 that are specified at 330 Newtons (standard) to lift the aluminium hood, it worked for me very well and it is very cheap the fittings are the same no modifications needed....also note that the density of steel compared to the density of aluminium is 1 as to 2.5
