That's really sloppy. The Post Office provides LatLong data for the 17,000 (IIRC the number) full postcodes, and it's available for relatively low cost.

Guys and girls, a quote from BMW UK on the subject of why only five chr post codes when I made an 'observation' (i.e. complaint!) to them earlier.
"Thank you for contacting BMW Customer Information.
We are sorry to hear of your disappointment with the Navigation system in your vehicle. The reason for only having up to 5 digit post code entry is because of the limited space on the Navteq disc. It also allows to show roads across some parts of Europe as well as the UK , which uses a lot of space on the disc.
There are currently no plans to change the Navigation system in our vehicles, however we will forward your comments to BMW Germany for future consideration.
Sorry we could not provide the answer you were hoping for on this occassion."
End of storey it seems - from this statement they are not interested at all -as for adding other regions of Europe who knows what will happen - you guys whom the disc does not cover should get in touch and push BMW, maybe then they will create a mainland 'Europe' disc which could be offered as a supplementary in the UK, and vice versa in Europe, thus allowing for the storage space needed for the full 7 chr code to be used for the UK- (although why they are still using CD's for storage is beyond me, there are ample solid state technologies that would support the requirements much better.
I'm not holding my breath for a change on this one, I've flogged this to death with BMW, it appears they're not going to do anything to change the situation ..........................

Has anyone tried the UK & Ireland only disc from Navteq? It is available on their web site for half the price of the European disc.
I am considering buying it, if it has better a postcode function than my 2007-1 European disc. I have E-mailed them to ask this but no reply yet.
My current disc does not even have all the postcodes in; I have only tried 2 so far with no joy.
