Surely not just a licence fee issue. We already are paying through the nose for the SatNav - ?1,600 or so for the installation (yet probably costs under ?150 - as car already has a screen, albeit slightly smaller, and hand held GPS receivers well under ?50) plus a fortune for each 6 monthly disk (saved thanks to e-bay and going for 6 months old version for circa ?20). The profits for BMW must be huge on the extras so surely they could afford the licence for post code usage ?
Or maybe my reply "swathed" in commercial language only served to confuse...

The other interesting question is price for the updates... especially since functionality does not seem to increase all that much.

I wonder if it's more of a software issue. 5 characters (digits) is the normal US-ZIP format... Shame it only gets part of a UK code, especially since the space counts as one character
Microsoft Autoroute has the same UK postcode "limitation". I know of no licensing issues - unless someone can educate me with a link.
I don't know how "wide" postal codes are in other territories.
You advise that the space counts as a character? So "LS12 3" isn't, for example, possible??

Functionality would be changed with a Progman upgrade I guess.

How do you tell what you currently have and how often do they update these disks for navigation? I got my car in April 2007.

"Thank you for contacting BMW Customer Information.
We are sorry to hear of your disappointment with the Navigation system in your vehicle. The reason for only having up to 5 digit post code entry is because of the limited space on the Navteq disc. It also allows to show roads across some parts of Europe as well as the UK , which uses a lot of space on the disc.
There are currently no plans to change the Navigation system in our vehicles, however we will forward your comments to BMW Germany for future consideration.
Sorry we could not provide the answer you were hoping for on this occassion."
End of storey it seems - from this statement they are not interested at all -as for adding other regions of Europe who knows what will happen - you guys whom the disc does not cover should get in touch and push BMW, maybe then they will create a mainland 'Europe' disc which could be offered as a supplementary in the UK, and vice versa in Europe, thus allowing for the storage space needed for the full 7 chr code to be used for the UK- (although why they are still using CD's for storage is beyond me, there are ample solid state technologies that would support the requirements much better.
I'm not holding my breath for a change on this one, I've flogged this to death with BMW, it appears they're not going to do anything to change the situation ..........................
